Thesis resume

This thesis proposes a new interpretation of Diderot's aesthetics. His particularity is to not focusing on his texts of theatrical poetics or art criticism, but on his theory of "perception des rapports" built around the 1750s and reaching its most accomplished form in the article BEAU of the Encyclopedie. We wish to show that this article is far from a cold and dogmatic text at odds with the rest of his work. On the contrary it constitutes in its essence the third Lettre of which the philosopher evoked the project in his correspondence with Father Castel of 1751. This genealogical hypothesis allows us to insert the article in a new continuity and to shed new light on the stakes and the progressive stages of the construction of the aesthetics of the first Diderot. Moreover, it reinserts the theory of the "perception des rapports" in its relation with a set of metaphysical and gnoseological concerns of the time. By broadening the perimeter of aesthetics within a theory of knowledge and a metaphysics from which it was not separated in mid-eighteenth-century France, we can resolve a number of interpretive problems historically linked to the article and to the theory of "perception of relations" in general. In particular, it will be a question of identifying the ambiguities of the very meaning of the word "beautiful" for Diderot, but also of discovering a new conception of sensibility seeking to open a third way at the intersection of rationalism and empiricism in order to overcome their respective limits. We will then be able to bring out the problems and the singular proposal from which emerged the formation, in the middle of the Enlightenment, of the first great atheistic and materialist aesthetic.
