Thesis resume

Learning to write relies on the efficient integration of visual and proprioceptive feedback (FB). At the beginning of the learning process, the motor control of handwriting is mainly based on the integration of visuospatial information about the trace being formed. With practice, this control becomes more predictive, and mainly based on the integration of proprioceptive information related to the writing movement. In some cases, difficulties appear during the acquisition of handwriting - the term dysgraphia is used to describe this disorder. New technologies are an interesting way to modify, decrease or increase the perception of writing. The aim of this thesis was to develop a software to modify the visual perception of the written trace in order to help the learning and rehabilitation of handwriting in children. Following a careful analysis of the literature, the general strategy that guided this work was to minimize the real time visuospatial information and to increase the information about the writing movement in real time and/or after the movement. We conducted this work in three main steps. The first one was to understand the effect of the modification of the trace induced by Light Painting (LP), an artistic photography technique allowing the ‘painter’ to write with a light. During the movement, the displacement of light in the dark creates a luminous trail that constitutes a real time visual FB on the movement speed. After the performance, the photo provides a FB on the shape, but also on the movement speed variations according to the luminous intensity of the trace. We tested two LP setups (standing without support and sitting with support) in a learning task of new letters. These first two studies confirmed the benefit of this visual FB modification in adults. The second step was to conduct a series of experiments in order to transpose the LP setup on a digital tablet. We tested two real time FB modifications, one of which replicated the LP trail effect. We also tested whether adding information about the kinematics of the movement after the trial provided additional benefit. The results showed beneficial effects of these visual FB modification, but only during the training session. During the post-tests, the specific benefits disappeared. In a final study, we performed an alternated modification of real time and postponed FB. The results showed a beneficial effect of this mixed strategy during the short-term post-test. In the third step of this thesis, we used the mixed strategy and developed a protocol for the rehabilitation of developmental dysgraphia on a digital tablet. Twenty children with dysgraphia completed an ABBA protocol over 12 sessions, 6 of which involved modification of visual FB of the trace. The results revealed an overall improvement in the children's performance following the protocol, with a rather marginal effect of the trace modification. In conclusion, visual FB modification influences the writing process and product of adults and children with dysgraphia. The use of the mixed strategy of FB modification seems very promising, in particular in the field of rehabilitation of the writing movement. This strategy also offers educational perspectives.
