On the Wavefunction of the Universe: From Semiclassical Perturbations to Non-Perturbative Dynamics. Applications to scalar fields and perfect fluid-dominated universes
Thesis resume
This thesis studies aspects of the quantum state of the universe across the regimes that separate a classical spacetime from a fully quantum one. Two descriptions of this state are available: the perturbative wavefunction $psi_P$, which obeys a Schr"odinger equation for the fluctuations on a fixed cosmological background, and the wavefunction of the universe $Psi$, which obeys the timeless Wheeler--DeWitt equation of canonically quantized general relativity. We organize the two as successive orders of a single semiclassical expansion, and develop three main results along it.
First, within the perturbative description, we characterize the Gaussian state of the primordial fluctuations from inflation through reheating, the radiation era, and recombination, where most treatments stop at the end of inflation. As a byproduct, this computation allows to show that the phase coherence of the acoustic oscillations imprinted in the cosmic microwave background is emph{universal} across single-field inflationary models: its variance at recombination is fixed by observations alone, independently of the inflationary energy scale. This result positions the phase coherence as a consistency test of single-field inflation and fixes the reference state against which any future probe of the quantum origin of cosmic structure must be read.
Second, we construct a systematic dictionary between the Wheeler--DeWitt
equation and cosmological perturbation theory. A WKB expansion of $Psi$ in minisuperspace yields an explicit map onto $psi_P$, recovering at leading order a positive-definite probability density and the standard Schr"odinger evolution, with the choice of relational clock playing the role of a gauge choice. At next-to-leading order, genuine quantum-gravitational corrections become significant precisely at the threshold of eternal inflation, where they should yield calculable signatures in the power spectrum.
Third, where the semiclassical expansion fails altogether, near a classical
singularity, we promote proper time, the invariant that defines geodesic
incompleteness, to a dynamical variable of the quantum theory. The
Wheeler--DeWitt constraint then becomes a genuine Schr"odinger equation carrying a positive conserved density. Demanding self-adjointness of the Hamiltonian, and hence emph{unitary} evolution, regularizes the classically singular radiation-dominated universe: the wavepacket follows the classical contracting branch, reaches a minimal radius set by its quantum width, and re-expands, producing a non-singular bounce. The same framework recasts the no-boundary proposal as a dynamical bounce of a closed universe.
